Dana Thomas - Alpha Theta President
The Delta Kappa Gamma Society International is a professional honorary society of women educators. The North Carolina Delta Kappa Gamma is the state organization. Alpha Theta Chapter is the local organization representing Surry and Mt. Airy. The international, state, and local societies promote professional and personal growth of its members and excellence in education.
Currently, our Alpha Theta Chapter has a total membership of sixty-two. Fifty-four of those members are active members while five are reserve and 3 honorary. Members are made up of retired educators and those who are still actively working in the education arena.
There are seven purposes of Delta Kappa Gamma. The purposes are the fundamental reasons our Society exists. They are the “why” our founders organized DKG and continue to be the core guiding our actions as members:
1. To unite women educators of the world in a genuine spiritual fellowship;
2. To honor women who have given or who evidence a potential for distinctive service in any field of education;
3. To advance the professional interest and position of women in education;
4. To initiate, endorse and support desirable legislation or other suitable endeavors in the interests of education and of women educators;
5. To endow scholarships to aid outstanding women educators in pursuing graduate study and to grant fellowships to non-member women educators;
6. To stimulate the personal and professional growth of members and to encourage their participation in appropriate programs of action; and,
7. To inform the members of current economic, social, political and educational issues so that they may participate effectively in a world society.
This year we have a new theme “Linking the Past, Present and the Future.” I look forward to collaborating with all members during the August, December, February and April meetings.
